Our Trans Inclusion Statement
Wednesday 27th April 2022
The heightened and unacceptable level of discrimination against trans and non-binary people continues to be deeply alarming. This includes a series of political and legal developments that have caused widespread distress and further marginalisation of trans and non-binary individuals in our society.
Much of this is driven by the recent Supreme Court ruling on the definition of “sex”. While the ruling clarified that “sex” refers to biological sex for the purposes of the Equality Act, it has left many trans people feeling vulnerable and excluded, despite still being protected under the characteristic of gender reassignment. The ruling has already led to confusion and distress in workplaces and public services, and risks undermining the progress made toward trans inclusion and equality.
As a committee and as individuals, we are upset, frustrated, and deeply concerned by these developments. We want to take this moment to reaffirm our position as an LGBTQ+ network that spans the insurance sector, and to emphasise to our community, firms, and colleagues across the industry that we strongly and wholeheartedly oppose any actions or interpretations that diminish the rights and visibility of trans and non-binary people.
With this in mind, Link seeks to:
We urge our community, especially those with LGB identities to recognise that this is our issue too. Link calls on those in senior positions within our industry to use their privilege to speak out and actively support their trans and non-binary staff.
Most importantly, we call upon the government to uphold its commitment to the entirety of the LGBTQ+ community, and to ensure that trans and non-binary people are protected, respected, and included in all aspects of public life and policy.
Above all, to our trans and non-binary friends, colleagues, and family: we see you, we support you, and we stand with you.
With love and solidarity,
Maxim, Maurice, & the entire Link Community
